2013 done, 2014 here we come!

Heaps has happened over Christmas - doesn't it always? Prior to Christmas I had been lucky enough to secure some sponsors for my 2014 Masters Quest. I am so fortunate to now have the support of Apres Velo, Auto Brokers Australia, Rydges Bell City Hotel, Champion Systems (again) and Flex Out Physiotherapy (again) in my bid to go to the UCI World Masters Track Champs again. I you get a chance check out their websites, the links are in the sidebar.

UCI World Masters Track Champ - 2013
These companies all support cycling and sport in their own ways and it is fantastic to see their commitment goes all the way down to 'grassroots and country' level support.

Christmas was crazy, in two weeks we drove to Nowra return for a wedding (congrats Lachie and Erin!), we drove to Sydney for a family Christmas and then we drove to Bendigo for another family Christmas.

Day 1 Victorian Xmas Carnivals - Horsham
in my Apres Velo Shirt!
Two days after Christmas saw the start of the Cycling Victoria Xmas Track Cycling Carnivals, the first race being in Horsham, then Bendigo, Shepparton and fourth day in Wangaratta. I tend to go better as the days progress, with no exception here. My goals for this racing series were to get back some stamina and endurance as the races were predominantly endurance or longer style. I kept to a smaller gear the whole series to try and improve my leg speed as well. The big thing about doing the whole series is being able to back up day after day, I tend to ride smarter and to my strengths as I get tired. I was racing in Women's A grade and also the Omnium series. If you qualified for the Wheelrace finals, you could do up to seven races a day! Of course the weather plays a big part and at this time year its either hot, hot and windy or windy.
I was really happy with my improvements that's for sure, and the social side of the carnis is always lots of fun. Its great to see the young and or new riders coming through - I remember in a not so distant past racing against Annette Edmonson and Steph Morton!  Many of the ladies are at least 20 years younger than me, so I was happy to be finishing up the front!

Sebastian and friend Riley discussing tactics at Wangaratta Carnival Day 4
Sebastian had a great carnival series, he loves racing and is always talking about how he will approach the next race! He had some good placings and wins and I am so proud of his positive attutide. He is tall but very lean and some of the kids he races against are a lot more solid, but not to deter he always has a crack because he loves it. That's what its all about - isn't it? Its amazing that a nine year old understands the tactics of track cycling races but he loves it and he has been around the track for a while now, so I guess there has been an osomotic effect! Unfortunately for him he had a touch of gastro as we were finishing racing at Wang so new years eve was a quiet one for us.

Reflecting back on 2013 - what a great year! So many rewards for all our work! Well done team Laws! New World titles, new Aussie records, and Australian Masters Female Track Cyclist of the Year!

Me with Nettie Edomonson - COTY 2013

So what's in store for 2014? New coaching, new sponsors, new age-group, new world records! No resolutions as I am happy with where I am heading and how I am approaching it. I am supported by a great team and with hard work and dedication - that is how I am going to achieve my goals! I could use so many clichés but its all been said before...

Christmas 2013

So I need to get back into the swing of this blog thing, not that I ever did! A lot has happened since I last blogged, coaching changes, work changes, Sebastian's growing, too much to talk about. All I know is that I need to tell my experiences not only for my personal reflection but also to perhaps guide other cyclists out there with little pearls along the way:)

School's out now for 2013 and Christmas just around the corner. I have been busy trying to arrange some sponsors for my 2014 campaign. Going up an age-group is going to be very competitive and I have to keep my focus for training. Doing the extra one percenters like core work and pilates and diet is always tough at this time of year, but I have to just remember what it feels like to perform well and to perform badly as that's when the one percenters make the difference. I have specific goals and targets for the upcoming 2014 season, with my main event the 2014 UCI World Track Masters in Manchester, in October. There will be many bumps, hurdles and even mountains along the way (not good for a track sprinter) but if it was easy then everyone would do it.

Next lot of racing will be the Victorian Christmas Track Carnivals, four gloriously hot and dusty days of racing in Horsham, Bendigo, Shepparton and Wangaratta. I missed on these last year due to my upper back nerve injury, so I am looking forward to having some FUN! Its great racing for training, and I love watching Sebastian race too. If I'm lucky I might win some $$ but for me its all about enjoying the track racing with some great ladies to race against.

Hope you all have a very Merry and Safe Christmas!
